Exam preparation — RSL & Trinity Rock & Pop

Structured preparation for Trinity Rock & Pop and RSL guitar exams, up to Grade 8 — from a Grade 8 RSL-qualified teacher.

Guitar exam preparation in North London for Trinity Rock & Pop and RSL grades up to Grade 8, taught by a Grade 8 RSL-qualified teacher — graded pieces, technical exercises and exam technique, at a pace that suits the student.

If you or your child want recognised progress, graded exams are a brilliant way to stay motivated and measure how far you’ve come. I prepare students for both Trinity Rock & Pop and RSL (Rockschool) guitar exams, all the way up to Grade 8 — the grade I hold myself.

We work through the graded pieces, technical exercises, and the listening and improvisation elements, plus the exam-day technique that takes the nerves out of it. There’s no rush — we enter you for a grade only when you’re ready and confident.

Common questions

How quickly will I be able to play a song?

Sooner than you’d think — many students play a recognisable song or riff in their very first lesson. Lessons are built around making music straight away, so it never feels like a chore.

Do you teach complete beginners?

Absolutely — beginners are a big part of what I do. I teach children from age 6 and adults, from those who’ve never held a guitar to returning players picking it back up.

What ages do you teach?

All ages. Children from age 6 right through to adults of any age. Lessons are always tailored to the individual student.

Do you prepare students for exams?

Yes — I prepare students for both Trinity Rock & Pop and RSL (Rockschool) guitar exams, up to Grade 8, which is the grade I hold myself. Exams are optional and we only enter when you’re ready.

How much do lessons cost?

Lessons are £55 for an hour and £30 for 30 minutes, with 45-minute lessons also available. Payment is by bank transfer, and I ask for at least 24 hours’ notice to cancel or rearrange a lesson.

Where do lessons take place?

In my home studio in Enfield, or I can travel to you across North London — Enfield, Southgate, Palmers Green, Winchmore Hill and nearby areas. Travel further across London is possible depending on location.

What styles do you teach?

Mainly rock, blues and pop — plus the technique and music theory underneath them. Having performed in bands for over ten years, I teach these styles from real playing experience.

What’s included with lessons?

Backing tracks, progress notes, homework, chord and fretboard diagrams, and tablature — everything you need to make the most of your practice between lessons.

Do I need my own guitar?

Ideally yes, so you can practise at home between lessons — that’s where the real progress happens. If you’re not sure what to buy, I’m happy to advise on a suitable first guitar before you spend anything.
